I’m calling on MLAs of all parties to unanimously commit to an independent Commission of Inquiry into British Columbia’s public health and economic response to COVID-19.
Let's be clear: a public inquiry shouldn't be a politicized finger-pointing exercise. British Columbians deserve a constructive, evidence-based review that gets to the bottom of what happened, what worked, and what didn’t.
The COVID-19 pandemic has required an unprecedented response from government, our public health system, businesses, and everyday British Columbians. The physical, mental, and financial health of all British Columbians has suffered. Many have lost loved ones, lost jobs, lost opportunities, and missed moments of connection with our families and communities.
The pandemic and response have taken a heavy toll on the lives and livelihoods of people, families, and businesses in British Columbia. The full costs are still unknown, but they will be felt for many years to come.
We must ensure transparency through a thorough examination of the failures and successes of our COVID-19 response. Let’s make sure the lessons of the pandemic are identified and put to use building resiliency for the challenges we will face as we move forward together.
